Ernest Hemingway nasceu em 1899 nos Estados Unidos. Correspondente de guerra durante a Guerra Civil Espanhola, viveu na Espanha durante quatro anos, fato que inspirou grandemente sua obra literária. Era próximo dos autores clássicos da década de 1920, como F. Scott Fitzgerald e Gertrude Stein. A obra de Hemingway O velho e o mar ganhou o Prêmio Pulitzer de Ficção, um dos maiores da literatura norte-americana, em 1953. Um ano depois, em 1954, o autor ganharia o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura.
