AVI LOEB é chefe do departamento de Astronomia da Universidade de Harvard, onde também fundou e dirige o maior centro de pesquisas sobre buracos negros do mundo, a Black Hole Initiative. É diretor do Instituto de Teoria e Computação do Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, presidente da Breakthrough Starshot Initiative e membro do conselho consultivo do governo norte-americano para ciência e tecnologia, entre outras atividades. É autor de oito livros e de mais de 800 artigos científicos. Em 2012, a revista Time o elegeu uma das 25 pessoas mais influentes do mundo no campo da astronomia.
