Maria Tatar é professora e pesquisadora do Centro John L. Loeb de Línguas e Literaturas Germânicas e de Folclore e Mitologia da Universidade de Harvard. Também é membro sênior da Harvard Society of Fellows e autora de muitos livros nas áreas de folclore, estudos alemães e literatura infantil. Escreveu ainda para os jornais The New York Times, The New Yorker, New Republic e Slate. É convidada frequente da NPR (National Public Radio, de Washington, DC) e da BBC. Recebeu o Prêmio Imagem da National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), na categoria Trabalho Literário de Ficção de Destaque, em 2018. Ela é bolsista da National Endowment for the Humanities, da Guggenheim Foundation e do Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies.
