Horizon Spectrum is a collection of literary works by Northwest Indiana writers. The publication of this anthology coincides with Indiana's Bicentennial; therefore Part I honors the Midwestern Hoosier state. Many "pages have turned" and years have flown by since the first ten fledgling writers gathered in the Lake County Reference Library in Merrillville, Indiana in January, 1989, to hone their craft. Current day members have compiled inspiring and intriguing poems, short stories, and excerpts from novels. Twenty-four authors take readers on various literary adventures. The journey begins by visiting the sandy Indiana dunes and being reminded of Indiana's rich heritage. Next, lucky college students from Communist China and central India share their stories and tell how they were able to secure "the American dream." Other true heartfelt memoirs can easily cause tears to flow. Amazingly, an Auschwitz survivor says she "forgives." Another writer shares her personal story about the aftermath of World War II, a time when poverty-stricken, homeless refugees had to fight for survival. One author recounts his life with humorous details, how he grew up in Gary, Indiana, "the Region," and became a millwright, like so many others. Yet, he finally decides that "Gary is not a place I choose to live and raise a family." He recently moved to Tennessee, but left his story behind. Diversity of content and style abound in this anthology. Delightful imaginations bring gargoyles, a poohbah, and an absentminded spider named Spinner-Ella to life. While death takes a young man to a Hell Hospital where he is supposed to serve out his sentence for killing three victims due to his texting and driving. And how does this sound? A tale that explores the possibility that Anne Frank isn't dead at all, but alive and well! For science fiction lovers, see what happens when an on-line connection turns out to divulge an approaching earthly disaster and an out-of-this-world time warp between two people. Visit the era of Jack the Ripper when newspaper reporters gather at a smoke-filled Press Club in Chicago during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. For a more present day topic, readers will probably relate to being searched at airports. That's what happens to a couple when a husband decides to tote his Bazooka pocket knife along on a trip. An assortment of striking poetry, pet rescue stories, environmental "Save-the-Earth" pleas, a bowler's pep talk, and the possibility of renewed hope for two cynics due to a serendipitous encounter at the beach, also add to the literary "Soup for the Soul" mix. The anthology wraps up offering a spiritual element. "Letters from Heaven" involves "correspondence between a Senior Guardian Angel and his subordinate." This emotionally provocative, creatively-charged book offers an enticing "spectrum" of literary works to enjoy-from sunrise to sunset.
