In volume III , we follow Augustin to Draco, where he grapples with the Zw?lle Power in the corridors and halls of Mount Atrosse, the residence of Prince Trug. Here, he parts with Athiello, who goes off with the man of her dreams (the reknown sculptor Lutel Mirgone), leaving Augustin with the untrustworthy Annylane Fron, the magnificent daughter of the Boscaud lighthouse man, who for unclear reasons helps him to cross the strait of Draco. Indeed, he meets her again some time later when she has become the lover of Lord-Admiral Larr of Sioulque and he- heaven only knows how- has become the personal advisor to the Prince.Once again, he has little time to get his bearings : a race against time ensues between Augustin, who is preparing a strategy to lead the invading Zw?lle armada into catastrophe, and the Minister, a little, insignificant man, who is in fact the most formidable of the Zw?lle police officers. Augustin flees again. It is in the basket of a hot air balloon that he arrives in Periache, the dreaded magical island shared by the influential Omen witches, and the Magdes, an order of female magicians led by the Spellbinder Lucilia. Many of their activities are given over to bewitching the Thrombes, men reduced to beasts, in whom a clandestine trade seems to have polarized Longwor. By serendipity and ruse, Augustin is able to free not only Nadja, but also his old friend Phial d'Atoy, who has been held in the Omen dunjeons. The candidate d'Atoy therefore has the time to travel to Hirpan (Lucilia's residence) to hear the final judgement of the Minusale Race. He wins against his dishonest opponents, but also against the young Homer Benjou, Nadja's brother, to whom he generously confides the post of Chief of Future Armies. All celebrate joyfully before returning to Clotone, and no one expects the terrible attack which the Zw?lles have prepared for them. In this horrible episode, Nadja is killed - drowned in an underwater cavern by Nardor Botulis, the dark assassin paid by the Prince. Devastated, the party disperses; the victor takes a quick boat back to rally the citizens in the capital, while Lucilia and Augustin sully forth in the immense underground caves which stretch out below the seas and among the islands. Augustin falls into a pit and nearly dies, reliving the myth of his birth.
