Edith Wharton, nasceu Edith Newbold Jones na cidade de Nova York, em 1862.De família rica, era fluente em francês, alemão e italiano, educação recebida de tutores particulares e aprimorada em viagens pela Europa.Se recusava a aceitar os padrões de Comportamento das jovens meninas, que tinham como único propósito aparecer em bailes para conseguir um bom casamento Edith passava grande parte de seu tempo na biblioteca do pai apesar de ter sido proibida por sua mãe de ler um livro antes do casamento. Aos 15 anos conseguiu que alguns de seus poemas fossem publicados
secretamente. Aos 23,se casou com Edward Robbins Wharton, adotando o nome do
marido, de quem se divorciou 28 anos depois. Morreu em 1937 após sofrer um AVC
