Maia Kobabe (1989) fez pós-graduação em quadrinhos pelo Califronia College of The Arts. Publicado nos Estados Unidos, em 2019, Gênero Queer tem edições em francês, espanhol, italiano, alemão, japonês, coreano, checo e holandês. Ex-bibliotecárie e professorie de quadrinhos para adolescentes, Maia se preocupa com a restrição de acesso de jovens como elu a livros fundamentais para compreenderem a si mesmes. “Não raro”, escreve Maia, “os jovens queer não têm opção senão procurar fora de casa e do sistema educacional as informações sobre quem são. Banir ou restringir livros queer em bibliotecas e escolas é como privar jovens queer de coletes salva-vidas, jovens que talvez ainda nem saibam quais palavras devem digitar no Google para descobrir mais sobre o seu próprio corpo, sua identidade e sua saúde.”
