Despite the status of Sebastiano del Piombo (c.1485-1547) as a significant figure of the High Renaissance-he was a close associate and rival of the central artistic figures of the period, notably Michelangelo and Raphael-no recent scholarly study in English has focused comprehensively on his life and times. This book re-appraises both the place of the artist both in the canon of Renaissance art and in the cultural worlds of Early Modern Italy and Spain in which he operated.
