Edith Nesbit (1858-1924) nasceu perto de Londres, na Inglaterra, e cedo engajou-se na luta pela justiça social, ao lado de escritores como H. G. Wells e Bernard Shaw. Considerada um clássico da ficção infantil e juvenil, sua obra foi pioneira no uso da linguagem coloquial e no tratamento do cotidiano das crianças, sempre abordado sob o ângulo da fantasia, tendo influenciado autores como C.
