Foi um dos maiores intérpretes da cultura japonesa no Ocidente. Filho de mãe grega e pai irlandês, nasceu em 1850, no contexto da colonização britânica, numa família rica que empobreceu de repente. Nos Estados Unidos, foi escritor e jornalista. Perseguidor do contato com o outro mundo, estabeleceu-se de vez no Japão, onde se tornou Yakumo Koizumi, nome que carregou até a morte, em 1904.
