JOSÉ SARAMAGO nasceu em 1922, de uma família de camponeses do Ribatejo, em Portugal. Exerceu diversas profissões — como serralheiro, desenhista, funcionário público, editor e jornalista — antes de se dedicar apenas à literatura. Prêmio Nobel de literatura de 1998, escreveu joias do romance, como O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo e Ensaio sobre a cegueira. Saramago faleceu em Lanzarote, nas Ilhas Canárias, em 2010. A Companhia das Letras publica a obra completa do autor no Brasil. |
