Prince Gilbert has to choose between two beautiful sisters for his wife in order to prevent a war between his kingdom and theirs. He soon discovers that his future father-in-law is something of a tyrant who forces his less attractive subjects to wear masks to hide their perceived ugliness. He also learns that the two beautiful princesses are not so attractive on the inside. Meanwhile, a chance meeting in the king's garden with a mysterious girl in a plain brown skirt and an old straw hat steals his heart, puts her life in danger, and threatens the future of the two kingdoms.
