Frank Smith foi repórter, editor de revista e novelista antes de iniciar sua pesquisa sobre a linguagem e a psicologia do aprendizado. Recebeu seu Ph.D. do Centro de Estudos Cognitivos da Universidade de Harvard. Foi professor no Instituto Ontário para Estudo em Educação e na Universidade de Victoria. Atualmente, dedica-se a escrever e pesquisar sobre alfabetização, computadores e educação.
